Why kids are natural born watermen - and women

We all have fond memories of splashing around in the water as a child. Whether it was in a pool, lake or at the beach, water activities are a part of childhood. Yet for some reason, parents are all too often surprised just how early kids become fond of water! Almost every kid loves playing around in ways that assembles an early adaption to water sport. Even the shiest, least confident little ones can quickly fall in love with being in the water, sparking a passion that can last a lifetime. Of course, watersports aren’t just great fun; they’re also important for child development and in many ways educational. At their core though, watersports are simply cool for everyone..

Why do kids love water sports?

Many children experience being totally put off sports at an early age due to the pressures of team competition. After all, team sports can be surprisingly difficult to join in on. Luckily, most watersports don’t work like that at all. Watersports like windsurfing, SUP, surfing and snorkeling have a strong focus on individual development. All of these sports are fundamentally about mastering your own body and your equipment. They are as competitive as you want them to be, but at heart they are about the individual experience. There’s no team to disappoint, no rivals to lose to, and no stress!

The sense of mastery and control, that kids experience when sailing fast on the water (from a kids point of view at least) releases lots of endorphins and serotonin. These are the human body’s natural drugs for keeping us mentally healthy, and that means HAPPY. Kids don’t know about these chemicals, they just call it “fun.” The body also releases chemical rewards for motivation, determination, and accomplishment. This means that while learning new skills and achieving new levels of performance, kids are being chemically rewarded and therefore having FUN! While children are having a blast playing on the water, they develop coordination and balance skills at their own pace. The freedom kids experience on water is essential for development of independence and confidence. The younger kids are when they get to grapple with water sports, the more fun it is to learn, since learning in that age happens in an intuitive manner through play.

Water sports simply bring something unique to the table that not many other on-land sports can!

Water sports are adventurous

Another cool thing about water sports is the sense of adventure. While most common sports take place on a set field or court, almost all watersports involve getting out into the wild. This sparks children’s natural urge to explore the world. Kids are curious by nature and want to learn new things and challenge themselves. They love exploring rivers and lakes of the wilderness by kayak or SUP, and catching a glimpse of the alien undersea world by snorkeling. Sailing gives kids the opportunity to adventure even further. Here they get to grapple with natural forces like wind, water and weather sparking the adventurous spirit within. Water adventures simply gives young minds the opportunity to engage with nature in an active and healthy way.

Water sports are educational

So.. It’s pretty obvious that watersports are funned cool, but actually they also have an important educational value. Children can learn about environmental conservation at school, but can textbooks really compare to the real world?

By engaging in watersport in an early age, kids learn to understand our collective need to preserve the natural world, simply by discovering the value of the great outdoors. When children love the beach, they begin to understand why littering is so terrible. When their favorite sport depends on waterways, they understand why our rivers, lakes and oceans need to be kept clean.

With time watersports can also be a great way to stimulate a child’s interest in ecosystems and other aspects of the natural world. An integral part of surfing is to understand movements of the ocean. Paddle boarders quickly realize the importance of reading the weather and sailors need to learn basics about how the wind and atmospheric pressure work. The great outdoors is a better teacher than any textbook, and kids always learn well through their own life experiences. In this sense, watersports trigger many different learning aspects, and there is really no reason not to get out there!🐬 🦈

Before you do though - keep in mind that safety must always be the number one priority.

Be Safe

Along with being fun and educational, watersports do have a serious prerequisite. It’s important for parents to keep their little one safe in the water. Either by making sure they wear a flotation vest like the WhipperVest or that they are taught to swim as soon as they are ready. Anyone who engages in watersport has to learn to respect the water and should have the skills or safety devices necessary. Either way, the key is to imbue children with not only passion and love for watersports, but also a sense of responsibility and care.

Anyway, the point is that kids and watersports go together like … well, kids and waterspouts!🦈 🐳 Most kids just can’t get enough of the water, especially those who don’t necessarily go nuts over your average school sports like soccer. Why? Put simply, it’s because watersports offer adventure, fun and the chance to develop skills without stress or pressure. Throw in the fact that watersports can provide kids with important knowledge that will stick with them throughout their lives, and it’s a no brainer that all kids should be encouraged to give watersports a try. Odds are, they’ll love it!

Meet the WhipperSail - the best windsurf rig for kids ever made!

Meet the WhipperSail - the best windsurf rig for kids ever made!

So… What is the deal about this new kids sail? The WhipperSail is special because it’s based upon a totally new concept developed in cooperation with Jeffrey Henderson from Hot Sails Maui.  It was NEVER a joke when we say that we take kids windsurfing seriously, and that’s the reason an excessive amount of energy was put into getting the concept JUST right.

This sail is designed specifically for the weight of kids between 3 and 6 years old, for beginner-friendly, light-wind conditions and big, soft cruising-boards like the WhipperBoard. It is simply the first kids’ sail that is designed bottom up with true intention, eagerness and no compromises!

The technical stuff

For the sail we intentionally chose high quality Dacron as main cloth. This makes the sail soft and forgiving - and just as important outstandingly colourful. It furthermore ensures  superior durability. Our 3d-panel design enables the bottom and forward shape of the sail to be constant and “full” at all times. This does what??

The sail catches any breeze and accelerates the windsurfer in a soft and gentle manner. The sail flex is superb and equal to the flex you see in full battened performance sails resulting in increased airflow. Because of that, the sail will always feel light in the hands of the sailor.

The mast is a long and juicy story, but we’ll confine ourselves and keep it short. It measures around the same diameter of a finger and is made from carbon/glassfibre. The mast is telescopic and the coolest feature of them all - it WHIPS! That means that assembling requires nothing but a whip of the hand and WHOPAAH! Because this piece of the rig is so light, the kids do not have to worry about being hit by the gear at all. This makes learning a FUN, easier and safer game than ever before offered to kids in the sport of windsurfing!

The boom was created to match the super skinny mast. We also took a look at all the existing booms in the market and noticed how humongous they all are taking the target audience into account. Not only are they noticeably over-dimensioned for the kids that use them, they are also big and therefore expensive to ship. So YES - we created a super simple and really light two-piece boom that assembles along the length and locks itself in place simply by using the outhaul, thereby making the heavy-clumsy-bulky boomheads known from today’s booms completely unnecessary and redundant! This furthermore enables the entire rig to be shipped in a 20cm x 100 cm box making it cheaper for us to manufacture, and by that more affordable for all of you!

 Rigging the Whipper

Rigging the Whipper is done without feeding pulleys or clamps. Both outhaul and downhaul are fixed by pulling ropes with knots on and jamming them into slots. This can not be done wrong and therefore the Whipper will always hit the water perfectly trimmed and good-looking :)

Another cool detail feature is the uphaul-system. The uphaul itself is sewn into the mast-sleeve and has a bungee ensuring that it is never in the way when not in use.

If you want to take a closer look on how it’s done - check out our setup-guide here 💪🏽

The rig fits all boards using a euro-pin connection. Make your kids stoked and Whipperize your exsisting windsurfboard or SUP by buying the rig here.

Christmas, Components and Construction

Christmas, Components and Construction

Christmas, Components and Construction

Christmas is just around the corner and Santa already started shoving the final Whipper samples down our chimney here at Maui!

Step one whenever a product part is delivered is quality checking it ourselves. The first couple of boards arrived with a refined insert part and improved mast-base positioning. We fixed some small details and then let one of our prime quality control team members Nurel take it for a spin :) Nurel is a rad 7 year old german windsurfer who simply loves being on the water. She was stoked about the WhipperBoard and genuinely hopes that WhipperKids will make a lot of kids join her at sea!

Meanwhile in China..

The picture beneath shows the first batch of boards being quality controlled for leaks. In the factory they inflate every single board to maximum pressure and leave them overnight. Only if the pressure is exactly the same in the morning, the board is packed and shipped westwards. It is more than great for us to be able to oversee the production process closely, even though we are literally oceans apart from our colleagues in China!

Boards quality check

As you read this these boards are travelling in containers towards Cold Hawaii Denmark and Maui! Excited? We are to say the least!

And here on Maui..

The mast also entered the final production phase. Watch a video on how to assemble it and how it works right here;

YUP! Thats right - you just have to whipp'it and it’s ready to rock. Telescopic COOLNESS if we may say ourselves!

When it comes to mast-base (the thing that connects the board with the rig), our initial plan was to equip all boards with a standard euro-pin mast-base. It turned out that these were not only super expensive but also way too heavy and over-dimensioned for our Whippers. Because of this as well as and the extended production time, we decided to create our own whipperized mastbase! It is going to be 1/4 the weight, a lot lower in profile and the edges will be softer. We already did a bunch of prototypes on our Maui-based 3d printer and so far they perform better than we wished for. The design is simply plain awesome! Here’s is a sneakpeak:

Sooo.. Orders are finally open for worldwide shipping. We already had our first american customers and we are ELECTRIFIED! The storage is limited, so be quick if you'd like to hit the water at springtime!

And now to the most important thing of them all…

☃🎅🎄🎁  Have a JOYFUL CHRISTMAS and some HAPPY HOLIDAYS!  ☃🎅🎄🎁
